The Caroline Islands form a large archipelago
of islands, widely scattered apart in the western Pacific
Ocean. They are situated north east of New Guinea and east
of the Philippines. Almost all the surf breaks are located
one to two miles offshore, on the island reef passes, very
similar to the set-ups you see in Tahiti. The only way to
get to the surf is with a reliable boat. The Caroline Islands
gather swell produced by the North Pacific winter storms,
and by the western Pacific typhoons from October to May.

P-Pass is featured in most of the
pictures below, absolute perfection! Photo Shield

to the uncrowded lineups. Photo Swilly
The east and west sides of the island have
different passes but by far the most consistent surf occurs
on the north west side. The main break, P-Pass is a world-class
right, very fast and hollow, a full-on barrel wave. This
wave is located 25 minutes away from the camp by boat. On
medium and high tides there is plenty of water on the reef
and lower tides can be surfed with caution. The predominant
winds here are side and offshore. The swell wraps around
the reef at P-Pass, and this, combined with the trade winds
make this the chosen wave on most days. P-Pass is so good
that you don’t want to go anywhere else. A perfect,
rippable wave to about 6 ft, above that size you enter another
level of surfing!

Perfect! Photo Allois

Main Pass peeling off! Photo

The second option is for the very experienced
surfer, a reef pass right in front the hotel that requires
a 10 minute boat ride. This right pass is called the Main
Pass and is always bigger. Main pass holds any size and
imitates Sunset Beach, if we had to compare it to any other
wave. Main Pass wraps around the reef even more than P-Pass
and is to be surfed only on high tides.

Plenty of good looking waves here,
hollow wrapping barrels
Both waves were featured in Surfer Magazine
and The Surfers Journal, but the location was never disclosed.
As mentioned before, there are many passes on all sides
of the island but most have not been consistently ridden
and are yet to be discovered. Chris and Allois, owners and
operators of PSC, the only surf operation in the Caroline
Islands, have lived in Hawaii and surfed all over the world.
It didn’t take too long for them to figure out that
it was here where they had the best surfing sessions of
their lives!

The camera never lies, this place
rocks!
The Caroline Islands can be a difficult place
to get safely from A to B, especially on the water with
lots shallow inshore reefs. However, PSC know and understand
surfers needs’ well. Allois and Chris, PSC’s
founders, are experts in local surf forecasting and day-to-day
conditions. Their local boatmen and guides are primed to
keep you busy on water or land!

Just another day in the Islands!

P-PASS
The Jewel! Truly a world-class wave with various
moods, depending on the size and direction of swell. At
2-3 ft it offers a fun wave that can be ridden by most levels
of surfer. When the swell reaches 4-5 ft, the wave opens
up more, giving hollow waves with less room for error. From
5 ft and above it is recommended that only experienced surfers
take on the sets and let everybody else enjoy the show.
For the most part, the reef here is flat and user-friendly,
although all of the passes do have some strong currents
at different changes of tide.

MAIN PASS
Main Pass is the channel that all the large
boats use to enter the lagoon of the island. The pass also
offers a fast and challenging wave that grows as you surf
along the wall. Main Pass is the swell magnet and will break
from 2 ft to 10 ft. The inside section of this wave is not
for the faint-hearted or the inexperienced surfer, as the
reef at low tide is fully exposed. This wave is for experienced
surfers only and is a super rippable wave, the best size
to surf it is from 3-5 ft.

EASY PASS
Easy Pass, the name really only describes
the outside section of the wave. With a soft, wrapping outside
section it can be surfed on high tide at between 2-4 ft.
Easy Pass is not as open to swell as Main Pass and also
has an inside section that should be avoided. This is another
fun wave that should be surfed by intermediate to advanced
surfers only.
FREDDOS
A world-class left on its day for sure!
Freddos is only 10 minutes from the camp and has the potential
to really pump when the winds are not trade. There are at
least three surfable sections on the reef and sometimes
they all link into a wall that imitates Money Trees in G-Land.
From 2-10 ft this wave is totally surfable and is very user-friendly.
SONDENS
From 2 ft to, well we don't know yet (!),
this wave is nothing short of incredible. At 2 ft it can
provide a fun, user-friendly wave which has at least two
sections. At 12 ft it looks like a mini Jaws with big drops
and heaving outside and inside sections. This wave also
needs non-trade winds or light winds.

See Chris's head at the bottom of
this monster!

SPAGETTIS
Named after the striking similarity to Macaronis
in the Mentawais, Spaghettis needs a large north swell or
an easterly swell to break. The reef has a perfect shape
to turn the ocean swell into funneling tubes between 2 and
6 ft. The reef here is a bit sharper than Freddos as it
does not get as pounded. Intermediate to advanced surfers
will love this wave!

RUSSELL'S RIGHTS
Russell's Rights is a great wave with at least
3 surfable sections on the corner of a small Island. It
is not the most consistent wave, needing an easterly swell
and favourable winds. If conditions prevail there is an
opportunity to surf fun waves from 2-6 ft.

Born in 1962, Allois Malfitani grew up skating
the streets of Sao Paulo, Brazil. A career as a professional
skateboarder was all in the making until one day in 1979
everything changed when he was introduced to the world of
surfing. Overcome with the desire to surf the best waves
the world had to offer and live the ‘surfing lifestyle’,
Allois in 1992 moved to the Mecca of the sport, the North
Shore of Oahu, Hawaii. For the next 12 years Allois had
it all. He lived steps from the infamous Waimea Bay, surfed
whenever he felt like it and had the ultimate job - managing
Mark Foo’s Backpackers Vacations Inns. It was the
epicentre for all the traveling surf pros and he was immersed
at the pinnacle of the sport.
More than 15 years back Allois had seen a picture in a copy
of National Geographic showing an unparalleled wave wrapping
around a reef pass. In the winter of 2000 with much apprehension
and only a single photograph to go on, Allois ventured out
to look for this fabled reef pass. Eventually Allois finally
came accross the wave and the beautiful island that accompanied
it. The wave and the set-up were ideal.

Allois, very happy with his new life
in the islands
Endless waves peeled off the pass with nobody
out there, waves with almost cartoon-like perfection. When
Allois rode that first wave across the bowl, he knew he
had stumbled accross something special. He came back to
Hawaii charged from surfing the best waves of his life.
Now, even the famous waves of the North Shore lacked something,
in comparison to the waves he had ridden there.
Upon returning he invited many friends to come and surf
the perfect reef pass he had surfed. Most of them wrote
him off thinking that he might be over-estimating the quality
of the surf and in addition nobody wanted to leave the North
Shore during the prime winter season. However the few that
left with him and took the risk were rewarded ten times
over. For 3 weeks at a time, he and his closest friends
surfed their brains out with nobody else out there, grinding
barrel after barrel.
Now Allois and his good friend Chris Groark (co-owner of
PSC) are sharing their treasure with others. Allois and
Chris have joined forces with Global Surf Guides to offer
unparalleled surf vacations to PSC where selected small
groups of surfers can enjoy and preserve this forgotten
place. A world-class spot hidden as a true jewel in today's
crowded and over-exposed surfing destinations.

Besides the surf this island have many beautiful
waterfalls, long mangrove channels that will remind you
of a water maze, ancient ruins the size of a couple of city
blocks, crystal clear water for snorkeling, incredible fishing,
good restaurants and bars, and the mountains where you can
relax, have a beer and see a beautiful sunset over the barrier
reef.

A lush and beautiful island with
many reef passes and tourist attractions
In every different island or atoll a different language
is spoken. English is used in schools as a medium of instruction
and is the official language in the Caroline Islands. The
crime rate is extremely low and the natives are as nice
people as you can imagine. The local people drink a similar
drink to Kava in Fiji. If you want to try some they’ll
be more than happy to bring you a bottle (for around just
USD $4!).

The ancient ruins, surely one of the wonders
of the world!
The local people are very gifted in traditional wood carving.
PSC will take you to their carving village to see this highly
skilled craft. The island is 130 square miles and has 40,000
habitants. Continuous Protestant missionary activity has
taken place here since 1852, and continuous Catholic missionary
work since 1886. At present, the population of the island
is divided about equally between these two Christian religions.

Lush is the first word that comes to mind!
Cupids Bar for afternoon drinks

The beauty
of these islands have to be seen to be believed!
The climate in the Caroline Islands can be characterised
by high temperatures, lots of rainfall and high humidity.
About 190 inches of rain falls annually around the PSC camp
area and up to 400 inches in the high mountains of the island.
Temperatures are uniform with the mean lows in the mid-70s
and the mean highs in the mid to upper 80s. The humidity
in the island is 80 to 90 percent.

Our Freindly Staff
Front L to R: Roro and Sunden
Back L to R: Renika, Beru, Katterson, James and Ehrline.
PSC is the first and only operation in The
Caroline Island group that was founded (in 2004) with
surfers in mind. Allois and Chris have been surfing
these waves since 2000 by themselves! We and our team
of local boat pilots and local guides will be doing our
best to take you where the best surf will be everyday.
If girlfriends or wives don't feel like staying on the
boat all day long
we can show them plenty of other things to do around the
island.
Transportation with PSC is simple. You
and your friends need only to gather your boards and fishing
gear and walk outside your bungalow to the waters edge.
From there all it takes is to get in the boat and you
are off!

PSC has two boats, a 23 ft and 26 ft boat
ready to go at any time. They are to available to surf,
fish, picnic on one of the other islands located inside
the lagoon, navigate the mangrove channels or to reach
the trails of waterfalls or ancient ruins.

During Allois’ search for empty perfect
waves, and the location to start his camp in the islands
of the Pacific, he came across something he really was not
expecting, that there are origins of surfing in the Caroline
Islands! Surfing that could be as ancient as the art performed
by the Hawaiians, as documented in The Hamburg Expeditions.
The Hamburg Expeditions:
1908-1910, the ship ‘Pesho’ with the Hamburg
South Seas Scientific Expedition, worked for 3 months on
these islands. "People and Culture of the German Pacific"
by Ernest Sarfert and Kramer, includes accounts of ancient
ruins, cultural aspects, the weaving, the looms and skills
and the constructions of canoes and houses by the natives.
The following games were observed or were documented:
"Lying on a piece of wood and riding the surf
towards shore, Supposed to
be an ancient game. They called it, Lallal Noa."

The fishing here is just awesome! Being only
400 miles north of the equator the ocean here is very warm
and so fish are very active. Most of the fishing is done
on the way to and from the day’s surf. What a way
to finish a session pulling in a 8kg Wahoo! There are all
kinds of fish here:
Fish Species
- Wahoo
- Yellowfin Tuna
- Striped Tuna
- Dolphin Fish
- Rainbow Runner
- Giant Trevally
- Bluefin Trevally
- Sailfish
- Marlin and more...

After you have caught your fish, the restaurant
at base camp will cook it up for your lunch or dinner for

are worth the return trip alone, they are huge and cost
less than USD $10!

TESTIMONIALS
Thanks for inviting me along. This has been one of
the best trips I have ever been on. We scored good waves
every day. That right-hander Sonden's on the big day blew
my mind. I wish I had my 6'8" on the boat so we could
have had a go at some of the 10-12 ft bombs. The beetle
nut was a memorable experience along with the hazard control
chicks. Loving the Sakau and vodka deadly.
Tom Innes
Cheers Allois and Chris had a great trip, plenty of
things to do. P-Pass looks amazing and the few moments it
came to life was sick. One good barrel made my trip and
all my mates that are here with me. Food was good if not
great. Weather was sick pretty much the whole time. Thanks
guys you have done a great job. Stoked to have been here.
Ian "Wooly" Macpherson, West Aus.
An epic adventure to the heart of Palikir. Looking out
more than in. Riding fast and high, exploding ocean warping
by… some of the best barrels of my life…….
Stoked. Thanks boys. Keep it up!
Kierren Perrow
Thanks for the great time. Didn't get much surf - it
didn't reach the high waves of the prior epic sessions but
it was a fun wave the whole time. The hikes to the ruins,
gun emplacements, waterfalls, and fishing added a whole
other layer of things to do. The larger falls are some of
the best I've ever seen. I'll be back!
Jeff Divine
Amazing place you have here guys. Never ran out of things
to do. P-Pass is perfect. Can't wait to come back and get
it with some more size. Stay away from Allois. He is a creepy
man, nah LEGEND. Chris and Sonden all top guys. I will be
back for more perfect barrels and big pits. Adios.
Simon Ormerod
That P-Pass wave is a piece of sh*t. Wish it would
barrel, ha kidding. The best wave I have ever surfed and
the afternoon beers don't taste any better. Cheers.
Beau "Naughty" Emmerton
Been around the world a million times. Seen the best
waves in the world but this trip was one of the best. P-Pass
is f***ing sick at two feet or eight to ten the place unbelievable.
To all the boys at the camp … great work.
Gary "Kong" Elkerton
Just had the best surf trip of my life. Insanely sick
barrels, great crew, and great people. Thanks for giving
us a taste of paradise. Allois and Chris, Sonden, Biro and
Roro - you guys rock.
Donny Valenzuela
Thanks to all the boys; Allois, Chris, Sonden, Biro
and Roro. The trip of my life. Best barrels and best time
ever. Can't wait to see you all soon.
Chris "Roots" Ruotolo
We scored six to eight foot P-Pass. Everyone calling
it their best day of surfing ever. Thank you Allois and
Chris and the boat boys. I'll be back!
Andrew Shield
Thanks Allois and Chris.
Surfed some of the most perfect waves of my life. The most
tubes I have ever had on a trip that's for sure. Thanks
again to Fred and the boys. This island is paradise.
Brenden Margieson
Most epic session ever.
P-pass is by far the best right in the world.
Dylan Longbottom
Thanks for all the hospitality and the most fun I've
ever had at a surf camp with a flat spell…. Never
laughed so much in my life. Good on ya crew. I'm going to
bed early.
Spider from Coolum
Allois, Chris, Sonden, Biro, and Roro you guys have
shown me something I'll never forget. Thanks you so much.
Scored perfect P-Pass with only a few guys. Longest and
best barrel I've ever surfed. Can't wait to come back. Keep
an open room for me if the swell is supposed to be big.
I'll be on my way.
Ian Powell
What a fantastic place. P-Pass has the perfect setup.
Allois, Chris, Sonden, biro and the crew were great.
